What is UKHERD?

UKHERD is a national network of development practitioners and stakeholders with interests in the careers of research staff in UK Higher Education. Its mission is to enhance research capacity and performance by enabling better management, professional development and career structures for research staff.

Our aims are to:  Share good practice

                            Build effective policy

                            Influence key decision makers

UKHERD’s network includes staff development, HR and careers professionals as well as staff working in University research offices. Other stakeholders represented in the current membership include Research Councils UK, the Wellcome Trust and UK GRAD.

Who is in UKHERD?

UKHERD is a network for anyone who undertakes a researcher policy development role in the

UK. Aims, objectives and action are steered by a small group of practitioners from a range of HE and Research institutions.

How can I join?

  • Development and HR professionals (staff development officers, personnel  managers, career advisors etc)
  • Policy development staff within funding organisations (RCUK, Wellcome Trust, HEFCs,  charities)

UK HERD Membership Survey 2008

Many thanks to everyone who participated in the 2008 Membership Survey.  The purpose of this survey was to find out more about UKHERD members and their needs, and specifically to identify the kinds of support, advice, and resources that would help members in their roles in the future.  Survey results will be released shortly and will inform the development of the new Researcher Development Programme
